All-Natural Homemade Laundry Detergent

Today I ask you to rethink your traditional store-bought laundry detergent.

Well, good question.

In store bought laundry detergents there are a handful of harsh chemicals used to get your cloths clean. Many are known causes of cancer or respiratory problems. These chemicals are on your clothes that are constantly rubbing on your skin — your biggest organ.

Check your Detergent Label

Do you see ingredients like quaternium-15, petroleum distillates, linear alkyl benzene sulfonates or LAS? All of these are linked to cancer. How about polyalkylene oxide, ethylene oxide or bleach? These are known to cause lung problems.

A ton of the detergents on the store shelves promote their brightening effects. Well, this is caused by chemicals like naphthotriazolystilbenes (ten points if you can actually pronounce that) which actually clings to your clothes to absorb UV light making your clothes “appear” brighter. This chemical is known to have effects on development and the reproductive system.

Yuck! Am I right!?

Who knew our trusty laundry detergent — that we’ve been using all our lives — was so nasty!?

However, there is a silver lining: you can make your own laundry detergent at home for less than you have been paying for your chemical filled varieties!

Make your own instead

In this all-natural recipe, baking soda brightens clothes without any harmful effects. And essential oils create a fresh clean smell, not chemical filled artificial fragrances. This all-natural laundry detergent is truly better in every way! And cheaper!

If you cruise Pinterest you will quickly learn that there are dozens of natural laundry detergent recipes out there. It’s a bit overwhelming!

So what I’ve done is found a few from trusted natural bloggers and created my own recipe based on what I liked from each. Feel free to check out these wonderful blogs for variations of this recipe!

You will need:

2 boxes of Baking Soda (454g each)

2 boxes of Washing Soda** (454g each)

2 bar Castile Soap

1 cup Epsom Salt

25-30 drops of Essential Oils

container (where to buy the one I used)

** If you cannot get ahold of some washing soda, you can actually make it at home. All you do is take a box of baking soda, spread it out onto a baking sheet and put it in the oven at 400 degrees for an hour. This is what I did for this recipe and it worked great!

1. Combine all the ingredients together in a food processor if you have one. If you don’t, you can use a cheese grater to grate the bar of soap, then I used a hand blender to get the pieces even smaller. Then add the rest of the ingredients and blend it well.

2. Use a hand blender to break apart the essential oils because they created lumps in the mixture. I just blended it on high with my hand blender for about 2 minutes.

Then you’re done and can pour it into your container and start cleaning laundry the non-toxic way 🙂 You will only need 1-2 Tbsp. per load depending on the size and soil level.  For most of my laundry I use just 1 Tbsp. which means this recipe makes 135 loads!!

I would just like to note that this may not be strong enough to get cloth diapers as clean as a laundry detergent that is meant for them. I don’t use this on my cloth diapers because I really like how my Rockin’ Green cleans them. But I do use this on everything else.

I love this recipe because it’s all-natural and I it only takes a few minutes to make! And it only cost me about $20 to make 135 loads! (I already had my essential oils so not including that cost) AND it smells amazing!!

And I can keep switching up the fragrance if I like. When I run out I might try lavender or pine for an earthy smell.

I hope you love this recipe as much as I do!
