Essential Oil Bug Spray +Kids Recipe

DIY Bug Spray with essential oils. Babies and Kids bug spray for 3 months and up

What is the most annoying sound you can think of?

That tiny buzzing of a mosquito flying all around your head while you shake and swat like an idiot. Like you’re going to hit it, it’s so small you can practically see through it!

I can see why people have chosen to use a toxic chemical to repel them, they’re horrible!! But in hindsight maybe coating our skin with a toxin isn’t the best approach 😉

We’ve all hear the news: DEET is unsafe, it’s a very potent chemical after all. But have you ever looked into why DEET is unsafe?

Well, I did and it’s pretty unsettling.

Use of DEET has been linked to brain cell death and behavioral changes. A study found frequent and prolonged use causes neurons to die in regions of the brain that control muscle movement, learning, memory, and concentration.

Heavy exposure to DEET can have effects that may not be detected until months or years after exposure. These effects include memory loss, headaches, weakness, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, tremors and shortness of breath.

Those are some pretty disturbing side effects. It’s even more upsetting to think that most of us have been applying DEET to our skin every summer for years! I know I have.

But as you can guess, I’m about to show you how I’ve been repelling the ‘skeeters this summer, and it’s as simple as combining oils.

I’ve supplied you with two recipes, one is safe for babies and kids 3 months and older (adults can use it too, I’ll get to that), and the other is for everyone 2 years and older (including adults) and is cheaper if you don’t already have an essential oil collection.

Recipe #1. For Babies and Kids (3 months+)

These oils have been deemed safe for babies over 3 months but please use your own judgement. Do a test spot first to see if your baby has a reaction to any of the oils and use sparingly.

Make sure you dilute properly.

I am not a doctor, so if you feel uncomfortable putting essential oils on your baby, you make that call. My son was 5 months when I first used this on him and he had no reaction, but each baby is different.

The dilution for babies 3 months to 2 years is 0.25% (one drop per four teaspoons), as they get older, you can up the dilution. From 2-6 Yrs 0.5% dilution (two drop per four teaspoons) and 6-10 Yrs 1% dilution (one drop per one teaspoons).

The following recipe is at the lowest dilution, so if you children are older, feel free to up the dilution.

You will need:

1 drop Cedarwood (Atlas) *Other variations are not as safe

1 drop Citronella Essential Oil

1 drop Geranium Essential Oil

1 drop Lavender Essential Oil

2oz  Witch Hazel

1oz Distilled water (boiled water works too)

3oz Glass Spray Bottle

Instructions

1. Drop essential oils into glass bottle, add witch hazel and water.

2. Shake before each use

Adult strength

You can use this same recipe for adults, just change the dilution to 3% (three drop per teaspoon or eighteen drops per ounce).

Recipe #2. For 2yrs+ (Cheaper Version)

If you don’t already have an essential oil stash, and you’re just buying oils for this recipe, you can buy these two to make it a bit cheaper. If you really want to be cheap, you can just buy the Shoo Fly blend, but I like to put some Citronella in there to add some extra punch.

This recipe will be 1% dilution (one drop per teaspoon) so safe for kids 2 years and up. Some of the oils used in the blend are not safe for children under two. It’s not about the dilution in this case, it’s about the actual oils.

You Will Need:

9 drops Shoo Fly Synergy Blend

9 drops Citronella Essential Oil

2oz  Witch Hazel

1oz Distilled water (boiled water works too)

3oz Glass Spray Bottle

Instruction

1. Drop essential oils into glass bottle, add witch hazel and water.

2. Shake before each use

Adult Strength

You could absolutely use this on adults as well, but if you’re looking for something more powerful, you can change the dilution to 3% (three drops per one teaspoon).

Since this blend doesn’t use harsh chemicals like DEET, you may have to apply it more often.

Enjoy this summer with no DEET and no bugs! This is just one more easy way to rid you home of harsh chemicals and support a natural lifestyle.

I would love to hear how this works for you!
